Cancer cure breakthrough? Docs find common cold can kill tumour cells

Common Cold Virus Can Treat Bladder Cancer With High Accuracy Research Reveals

The common cold virus could cure cancer, scientists say, as a "revolutionary" treatment was found to eradicate the disease in a week.

Researchers from University of Surrey in the United Kingdom investigated the safety and tolerability of exposure to the oncolytic ('cancer-killing') virus coxsackievirus (CVA21), a naturally occurring strain of the common cold, in 15 patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC).

In this study, 15 patients with the disease were given the cancer-killing coxsackievirus (CVA21) through a catheter one week before surgery to remove their tumours. Examinations of tissue samples post-surgery showed that the CVA21 had marked and aggressively attacked cancer cells within the bladder, but had conveniently left healthy cells alone.

The common cold could be used to kill off cancer cells in patients with bladder cancer, new research suggests. "Reduction of tumor burden and increased cancer cell death was observed in all patients, and removed all trace of the disease in one patient following just one week of treatment, showing its potential effectiveness", Pandha said, adding, "Notably, no significant side-effects were observed in any patient".

Study leader Prof Hardev Pandha from the University of Surrey and Royal Surrey County Hospital, said: "The virus gets inside cancer cells and kills them by triggering an immune protein - and that leads to signalling of other immune cells to come and join the party".

The authors of the study believe that this method of treatment of bladder cancer, which is not accompanied by serious side effects, may become a new word in oncology.

Bladder cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer in men with over 61, 000 new cases and around 13,000 deaths reported this year, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Tumours of this kind in the bladder are generally referred to by medical practioners as "cold", and thus invisible to the immune system, but the introduction of the CVA21 virus appears to switch them to a "hot" reading, making the body's natural defenses react in a positive way.

Huawei’s CEO claims HongMeng OS is faster than Android
Then the 170 countries and regions in which we now operate would stop buying our products, and our company would collapse. Interestingly enough, Hongmeng OS sounds quite like Google's Fuschia and Microsoft's WCOS- one OS to rule them all.

Constant, costly monitoring is needed to check cancer has not returned after treatment. So far, existing treatments pose a number of problems to the patients.

Researchers plan on conducting another trial with more patients that couples the common cold virus with a targeted immunotherapy drug, known as a checkpoint inhibitor, which stops the immune system from attacking cancer cells.

The op also has a high tumour progression rate between 10%-20% over a period of two to five years.

"In a similar vein, fellow researcher Nicola Annels said, "[CVA21] could signal a move away from more established treatments such as chemotherapy".

Dr Mark Linch, from Cancer Research UK, said: "Although at an early stage, these initial results are encouraging".

Incidents of bladder cancer are worse in Scotland than the rest of the United Kingdom, with 870 diagnoses in 2016 - 50 men and 290 women - with a higher proportion of women in particular.
