Disabled UK Woman Dies After Falling With a Metal Straw

Dorset woman died when she fell onto an eco-friendly metal straw

Elena Struthers-Gardner, 60, sustained a traumatic brain injury when the 10-inch metal straw went through her eye and pierced her brain on November 22, 2018, in her Dorset home.

Elena Struthers-Gardner, 60, collapsed at her home in Poole, southern England, while carrying a mason-jar style drinking glass with a screw-top lid, the Independent reports.

Sticking out the top of the jar was a 25cm stainless steel eco straw, which went straight through Elena's eye socket and pierced her brain, after she fell directly onto it.

She was prone to falling over due to multiple fractures to her spine as a result of the horse riding accident, that had also caused scoliosis.

Mandy Struthers-Gardner, Lena's wife of four years, told the coroner she didn't immediately hear the fall when it happened in November 2018, but later found her on the ground making unusual noises, the Daily Echo reported. According to her wife, it wasn't unusual for her to suddenly fall or collapse. Her glass cup was lying on the floor and the straw was still in the jar. According to the outlet, the tip of the straw stopped at the back of her skull.

Reading a statement to the inquest, Robin Struthers, Mrs Struthers-Gardner's brother, called for the coroner to comment on how easy it is to purchase metal straws, adding: "These straws can very easily be lethal".

"It seems to me these metal straws should not be used with any form of lid that holds them in place".

Mandy reportedly said it wasn't until she turned Struthers-Gardner over that she knew what had happened.

Bank of Canada bumps up 2019 growth forecast, keeps rates steady
In particular, trade conflicts between the United States and China are curbing manufacturing activity and business investment. Trade conflicts and competitiveness challenges are "dampening the outlook for trade and investment".

The metal straw movement looks to cut down on the number of plastic straws that end up in the ocean, where they pose a danger to animals like sea turtles.

Mrs Struthers-Gardner's life-support machine was turned off and she died on November 23 previous year, a day after tragedy struck at her home in Poole, Dorset.

Assistant coroner Allen said people must take "great care" when using metal drinking straws, as a fall like Struthers-Gardner's could be fatal.

"There is no give in them at all", Allen told the court, according to The Independent.

He said: "I just feel that in the hands of mobility challenged people like Elena, or children, or even able-bodied people losing their footing, these things are so long and very strong".

Leader of the investigation into Struthers-Gardner's death, Detective Inspector Wayne Seymour, said hospital staff were stunned by the injury.

'It seems the main problem here is if the lid hadn't been in place the straw would have moved away'.

"She was taken far too early".
