Here's why Trump is insulting Paul Ryan

Trump unloads on Paul Ryan after ‘American Carnage’ excerpts

The president said Ryan "ultimately become a long running lame duck failure" and left the GOP "in the lurch" as a fundraiser and leader.

Former House Speaker Paul Ryan's critique of President Trump in a recent book is all about the fact the commander-in-chief won't subscribe to Beltway norms, according to Hogan Gidley. Employing his favorite method of turning the insult around on the insulter, Trump claimed it was Ryan who had no knowledge of the government: "Frankly, he was a baby, he didn't know what he was doing".

'They gave me standing O's (ovations) in the Great State of Wisconsin, & booed him off the stage.

Trump also tweeted that Ryan failed to secure funding to build a southern border wall while Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress.

"He had the Majority & blew it away with his poor leadership and bad timing", Mr Trump tweeted. "Never knew how to go after the Dems like they go after us", Trump added.

"I told myself I gotta have a relationship with this guy to help him get his mind right", Ryan recalls.

"American Carnage" by Politico's Tim Alberta depicts a Republican Party that at first struggled with Trump's rise during the campaign before gradually coming to terms with him as President, according to a report by The Washington Post, which obtained a copy of the book. Ryan refused to send out subpoenas because Trump didn't want him to.

He added: "Those of us around him really helped to stop him from making bad decisions".

Ryan told Alberta that he viewed his retirement from Congress as an "escape hatch" after becoming exasperated with the "knee-jerk reactions" coming out of the Oval Office. "We are with you, Paul!"

United Kingdom police launch investigation into leaked ambassador cables
He asked the person behind the leaks to turn themselves in and avoid wasting detectives' time, saying: "You can stop this now". He urged the culprits: "turn yourself in at the earliest opportunity, explain yourself and face the consequences".

The assessment is a far cry from what Trump was saying about Ryan last April, when the former speaker stepped down. "Couldn't get him out of Congress fast enough!"

I can confirm that I did not pay Paul Ryan for the interview.

Ryan had no comment Friday on the president's tweets about him, his spokesman Brendan Buck said. He was unable to raise money, he lost control of the house.

What do you make of Paul Ryan's comments and President Trump's response?

"We need to move from an opposition party to a proposition party", Ryan said at the time.

Romney tweeted that the fault for the 2012 election loss to President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden "is mine alone", that Ryan was a "tireless campaigner, fundraiser, and conservative champion".

It has been widely reported that during Ryan's speakership, he had a frosty relationship with Trump.

Trump, in his typically visceral counterattack, hit back at Ryan as an unsuccessful national candidate who let down Republicans and then abandoned the party.
