Iowa reports 1st confirmed 2019 human West Nile virus case

An Aedes aegypti mosquito is seen on human hand in a laboratory

Iowa has its first confirmed human case of West Nile virus for 2019.

The state epidemiologist, Dr. Paul Byers, says most cases occur between July and September.

In 2018, MS had 50 cases of the mosquito-borne illness, with no deaths from it.

The other positive West Nile Virus samples were taken from traps located in Manhattan, Plainfield and Joliet near Sunny Hill Nursing Home.

The Judiciary Committee ordered Frakes to appear at a public hearing past year, months before Nebraska executed its first inmate by lethal injection.

"Positive cases in veterinary species, such as horses, can serve as a reminder that infected mosquitoes are circulating and people can be at risk", Dee W. Jones, the state public health veterinarian, said. The virus can only pass to humans from mosquitoes and horses do not pose any risk to humans for infection, officials said.

Use insect repellent with DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535.

Wear long sleeves and trousers during dawn and dusk hours.

Avoid outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

Experts say most people who are infected have no symptoms or experience only mild, flu-like symptoms.

In 2018, Nebraska reported a nation-high 245 West Nile cases in humans, including 11 deaths.
