Kilometer-sized asteroid orbits the sun every 151 days

Caltech The ZRF Spots Kilometer Sized Asteroid Circling Close to the Sun

"Thirty years in the past, individuals began organizing methodical asteroid searches, discovering bigger objects first, however now that nearly all of them have been discovered, the larger ones are uncommon birds", Tom Price of Caltech describes.

The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) camera scans the skies quickly every night from the Palomar Observatory, located 90 miles (145 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles. The newfound space rock, measuring a kilometer wide, circles the sun once every 151 days.

One other Atira asteroid has been discovered by the ZTF team, 2019 AQ3, which orbits the Sun approximately once every 165 days.

NES Games on Switch Are Getting New "Rewind" Feature
I still have a Nintendo Online subscription, but it's honestly starting to feel like a bit of a grudge purchase. For all the games in the NES library on Switch, you can hold the ZL + ZR buttons to rewind gameplay.

Astronomers have recently spotted an asteroid, cataloged as "2019 LF6", who has set the record for the shortest year among those of its kind - it orbits the sun in only 151 days. "LF6 may be very uncommon both in orbit and in measurement-its unique orbit explains why such a big asteroid avoided a number of decades of careful searches". The camera scans the skies rapidly making it well-suited for finding Atira asteroids with short observing windows. They may have ended up there because they got too close to Venus or Mercury and got affected by either of these planets' gravitational pull. ZTF looks for anything that's changing over time: not only stars that flash or explode but also asteroids that pass by, like the one described in a Monday (July 8) statement from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

"Because Atira asteroids are closer to the sun and warmer than other asteroids, they are brighter in the infrared", George Helou, executive director of IPAC (a CalTech astronomy center) said."NEOCam has the double advantage of its location in space and its infrared capability to find these asteroids more easily than telescopes working at visible wavelengths from the ground". ZTF has discovered around 100 near-Earth asteroids and about 2,000 orbiting in the Main Belt between Mars and Jupiter.

"It is one of the near-Earth asteroid groups that we don't know much about, since their unique orbits make them hard to observe", Yu told Gizmodo. NEOCam would pick up the infrared, or heat, signatures of asteroids. Additional support comes from the Heising-Simons Foundation, and Caltech itself. NASA supports ZTF's search for near-Earth objects through the Near-Earth Object Observations program.
