Manhattan Power Outage Knocks out Subways, Elevators

Rockefeller center power outage

A power failure struck the West Side of Manhattan on Saturday evening, plunging subway stations into darkness, stalling trains, stranding people in elevators, and for a time leaving parts of Times Square without its customary bright lights, according to authorities.

One of the earlier blackouts was reported right around the time a transformer fire happened nearby, but it's unclear if that was the cause.

'Members are responding to reports of numerous stuck elevators that are occupied, but there are now no patients reported, ' the department said on Twitter.

It said the outage extended from Fifth Avenue west to the Hudson River, and from the west 40s north to 72nd Street.

With traffic lights out, cars and taxis jammed intersections as emergency vehicles and fire engines with sirens blaring tried to pass.

"People from home were texting us, asking, 'Are you OK?'" said Dara Campbell, 40. We will continue to provide updates as soon as we have more information. "Our crews are working as quickly and safely as they can to restore service".

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is not in the city as he is on the campaign trail in Iowa, says he is keeping up to date on the blackouts.

"40K without power is Armageddon", he wrote on Twitter.

A diner on Broadway at West 69th Street lost its lights, as did other surrounding businesses. Carnegie Hall was evacuated mid-show and the singers continued their performance outside.

Everyone’s sleeping on Amazon Music Unlimited
While these devices can play music from other services like Spotify , they default to Amazon services in many cases. The Apple Music service is available for the iOS, HomePod, Apple Watch, Amazon Echo, macOS, Apple TV and more.

Casts from Come From Away, Waitress and Hadestown performed for audiences waiting to be admitted, according to Broadway World.

The "Love Don't Cost a Thing" singer also thanked the Madison Square Garden venue staff.

The Fire Department said it was responding to a transformer fire at West 64th Street and West End Avenue.

Photos on social media showed major landmarks without power, including Rockefeller Center and Times Square, where the famous video screens were dark.

Jeff O'Malley said he was stuck in a subway vehicle for more than an hour.

'We were stuck for about 75 minutes, ' said the 57-year-old consultant. 'It's completely dark (in the station); people were coming up using their flashlights on their phones'.

New Yorkers said firefighters and cops were everywhere throughout the city.

Power was not restored until the next day.
