Sudden turbulence’ leaves multiple people injured aboard Air Canada flight forces emergency landing in Hawaii

An Air Canada flight bound for Australia that left Vancouver early Thursday made an unscheduled landing in Honolulu after turbulence injured several passengers. The plane found itself experiencing extreme turbulence over the Pacific Ocean.

Flight AC33, which originated in Toronto, took off from Vancouver International Airport late Wednesday night with 269 passengers and crew on board.

It eventually landed safely at Honolulu airport in Hawaii at 6.45am local time where it was met by emergency services.

"I watched a whole bunch of people hit the ceiling of the plane", said Alex MacDonald.

A spokesperson for Air Canada told CTV News, "Preliminary information indicates there are about 25 people who have sustained minor injuries". "You drop usually a couple dozen feet or more and if you've been in the airplane standing, or serving food, you may get injuries to your neck, etc. because you're not in your seat belt".

The airline said it is arranging hotel accommodations and meals for passengers in Honolulu as well as options for resumption of the flight.
