Sudan's military council announces resumption of talks with opposition alliance

Sudanese demonstrators chant slogans outside the army headquarters

Lt. Gen. Gamal Omar, a member of Sudan's military council, said the coup attempt took place late Thursday, just days after the military and the pro-democracy coalition had agreed to the joint sovereign council.

Saturday's commemorative rallies came as mediators said talks between generals and protest leaders to discuss the finer details of a recently agreed power sharing accord had been postponed to Sunday, at the request of protest leaders.

On July 5, the TMC and the Freedom and Change Alliance, under a mediation by Ethiopia and the African Union, reached a deal on establishing transitional authorities to jointly govern the country.

The current ruling military council insists it did not order the raid on the sit-in, which according to the protest movement left more than 100 killed and hundreds wounded on that day.

The 3 June raid had come after talks between protest leaders and military generals - who seized power after the army ousted longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir in April - collapsed over who should head a new governing body, a civilian or a soldier. Authorities, however, put the death toll at 61, including three from security forces.

Security forces used barbed wire to block a main road leading to the Defence Ministry compound, the site of the protest camp crushed by security forces in June, a Reuters witness said.

Rasha Awad, editor of the online Sudanese newspaper Altaghyeer, said the military council's actions will determine what happens next.

Late on Saturday, the Sudanese Communist party, which is part of the protest movement, said it rejected the power-sharing agreement because it does not include an global investigation into the crackdown and it keeps paramilitary forces in existence.

Sudan's Transitional Military Council (TMC) on Saturday reiterated importance of partnership with the opposition Freedom and Change Alliance to end the political crisis in the country, Trendreports citingXinhua. An 11th seat is to go to a civilian chosen by both sides.

The agreement stipulates that the new governing body will be presided over by a military nominee for the first 21 months, and the last 18 months by a civilian.

They also agreed on an independent Sudanese investigation into the deadly crackdown by security forces on the protests last month, though it's unclear if anyone will be held accountable. Troops from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces stood on roads surrounding Burri, armed with sticks.

Dagalo accused "intelligence agencies" of defaming the RSF.

A crowd gathers as Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, the deputy head of the military council, speaks during a military-backed tribe's rally, in the Nile River State, Sudan, Saturday, on July 13, 2019.
