Trump dumped Iran deal to spite Obama: British envoy

UK police investigate Kim Darroch cables - CNN

"The administration is set upon an act of diplomatic vandalism, seemingly for ideological and personality reasons - it was Obama's deal", ambassador Darroch wrote in a diplomatic cable in May 2018.

Police in the UK have opened a criminal investigation into the leaked diplomatic cables that led to the resignation of Kim Darroch, the country's ambassador to the United States.

The report by the Mail on Sunday came days after Kim Darroch was reported to have sent diplomatic cables describing the Trump administration as "inept", prompting the U.S. president to claim the ambassador was a "pompous fool" whom he would no longer deal with.

In 2015, when Obama was in power, the US, China, Britain, France, Russia and Germany signed a deal with Iran to limit its nuclear programme in exchange for a partial lifting of worldwide economic sanctions. Now, the pact is gone and the sanctions are back with Trump promising more severity that could throw West Asia into chaos.

Scotland Yard performed a climbdown on Saturday following accusations it had attempted to use the furore over the leaking of comments by the British ambassador about President Trump to silence the British media.

Police have launched a criminal investigation into the leak of diplomatic emails from the United Kingdom ambassador in the US, Sir Kim Darroch. The memo also reportedly mentions how the USA is not reaching out to allies, especially those in Europe, in dealings with Iran.

Trump was hostile to the accord with Iran because it was "Obama's deal" according to the leaked diplomatic cable.

In furious verbal attacks on Darroch, Trump has described the ambassador as "wacky", "a very stupid guy" and a "pompous fool".

Sir Michael also backed a call by the Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner Neil Basu for any news organisations holding leaked government documents to return them.

The British ambassador is said to have highlighted splits amongst USA presidential advisors and that the White House did not have a "day-to-day" strategy of what to do following withdrawal from the deal.

Basu insisted on Saturday the police had "no intention of seeking to prevent editors from publishing stories in the public interest".

"The ability to have a free press is essential", he said.

Darroch's defenders said his critical memos showed he was doing his job by providing candid assessments, as diplomats are expected to do, but he said the controversy had made it impossible to fulfill his duties.

A spokesman for the newspaper said it was in the public interest and revealed "important information" on the UK's attempts to stop President Trump abandoning the Iran nuclear deal.

"What could be more in the public interest than a better understanding of how this position was reached, which may have serious consequences for world peace?"
