By the revised measure, life expectancy in 2015 and 2016 was flat, at 78.7, a decline from 78.9 in 2014. While the average suicide rate in the U.S. Accidental drug overdoses accounted for one third of unintentional injury deaths while intentional overdoses made up roughly a tenth of suicides, according to the CDC. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is urging congress to quickly fund research of a polio-like disease that's affected hundreds of children across the country. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified 286 suspected or confirmed cases of AFM. The agency has been monitoring cases of the rare condition since a noted spike in 2014 . (more...)

The death rate rose 10 per cent from the previous year, smaller than the 21 per cent jump seen between 2016 and 2017. In 2017, that rate had increased by 16 percent, to 11.1 deaths per 100,000. In all, 2.8 million USA residents died in the country in 2017 - 69,255 more deaths than in 2016. That dramatic increase has been driven in large part by drugs like fentanyl and tramadol, which have increased fivefold since 2014. (more...)

It says the tainted romaine appears to have come from the Central Coast region of California. The contamination happened "well before" the winter romaine lettuce farming started, according to the FDA , which says it is unaware of any contamination that may be present at the new growing locations. This outbreak is not related to the previous 2018 E. coli infections linked to romaine lettuce. The latest illnesses linked to the lettuce began between October 8 and October 31. No deaths have been reported. Symptoms of E. coli infection, which typically begin three to four days after the bacteria is ingested, include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. (more...)
