According to the CDC , it infected between three and four million people in the United States every year, causing an estimated 400 to 500 deaths. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned hedgehog owners not to "kiss or snuggle" their spiky companions, as a recent outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium has been linked to the unconventional pets. Of 11 people interviewed, 10 (91 percent) reported contact with hedgehogs before becoming ill. Additionally, samples collected from three different hedgehogs living in the homes of the infected individuals contained Salmonella Typhimurium . (more...)

According to a journal published in the BMC Biotechnology , the Edinburgh researchers spliced the gene that produces the proteins in humans into the part of the chickens DNA that handles the production of the white in its eggs. "So hopefully, we ll be looking towards at least 10 times lower the overall cost of manufacturing", she said. In addition, eating fried fish one or more times a day led to a 13 percent increase in heart-related death. Women who ate fried foods more regularly tended to be younger, non-white, with less education and a lower income.
