This is considered the earliest animal fossil footprint record. The rock layers where the fossils were found date between 551 million and 541 million years ago, suggesting the footprints were made some time between those dates. Professor Shuhai Xiao, a geobiologist at Virginia Tech University, told The Guardian: "Animals use their appendages to move around, to build their homes, to fight, to feed, and sometimes to help mate". The problem kept the robotic vehicle from extracting and analyzing Martian rock samples and severely affected the mission. A veterinary team rescued the whale and attempted to "stabilize its illness", according to AFP, but it died Friday after vomiting five plastic bags. According to the Thai Marine and Coastal Resources Department , an autopsy revealed that the whale had ingested around 8kg of plastic bags, which were preventing the whale from being able to eat.
