Researchers Detect Evidence of Lake Beneath the Surface of Mars
- July 26, 2018

A massive underground lake has been detected for the first time on Mars, raising the possibility that more water and maybe even life - exists there, global astronomers have said . That's because it's well below the freezing point of water; the only thing stopping it from turning to ice is a mix of toxic salts. "For more than three decades, planetary scientists have wondered whether that similarity extends to hidden lakes beneath the ice-caps, as we find under Earth's Antarctic ice-sheet". (more...)

- July 26, 2018

A blood moon is a term used to describe a total lunar eclipse , which is when the moon appears darkened as it passes through the Earth's shadow. The moon will pass through the centre of the Earth's shadow, giving rise to what is known as the Deep Red Blood Moon. (more...)
Life on Mars? Liquid water lake found on the Red Planet Life on Mars? Liquid water lake found on the Red Planet
- July 26, 2018

Researchers from the Italian Space Agency say they used radar to detect the lake under the planet's southern polar ice cap. Mars Express scientists Roberto Orosei and his team found a 12.5 mile patch of Mars with high permittivity-so high that the numbers like that are nearly always associated with liquid water, including lakes lurking under glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica. Mars Express Just Discovered a Subsurface Liquid Water Lake on Mars
- July 26, 2018

This discovery of a salty subsurface lake, on an object much closer to the Sun, and much larger than a moon, is even bigger news. The researchers noted that together, with the pressure of the, this lowers the melting point, allowing the lake to remain liquid, as happens on Earth. (more...)

- July 26, 2018

The planets aren't expected to be that close again until 2287, according to NASA. Commonly, auroras happen when electrons, energetic particles, ignite the gas particles in a planet's atmosphere making them shine in the night skies. If the storm doesn't break, skywatchers may only see a big orange disk, according to Mike Lynch, an amateur astronomer and professional meteorologist writing for twincities.com in Minneapolis. - July 26, 2018

The researchers explain that conditions on the Moon's surface were adequate to support simple organisms after the Moon formed from a debris disk 4 billion years ago , and also during a peak in lunar volcanic activity which occurred around 3.5 billion years ago. (more...)
Massive liquid water lake found on Mars, raising hopes of Martian life
- July 25, 2018

The instrument uses pulses of radar to study the interior structure of the planet and has been orbiting Mars on the Mars Express European spacecraft since 2003. A dose of realism: Liquid water in large quantities could be a real boon to any future Martian colonists. So the only realistic hope for significant amounts of liquid water is under the surface, at sufficient depth to create enough pressure to allow salt to overcome the low temperatures. (more...)
A 20km-wide body of water lies beneath a Mars ice cap
- July 25, 2018

Mars long ago was warmer and wetter, possessing significant bodies of water, as evidenced by dry lake beds and river valleys on its surface. The reservoir - which is approximately 20 kms in diameter and is shaped like a rounded triangle - is the first stable body of liquid water ever found on Mars. (more...)
Water on Mars: Scientists discover 12 MILE liquid lake on Red Planet Water on Mars: Scientists discover 12 MILE liquid lake on Red Planet
- July 25, 2018

Evidence was gathered a radar on the European Space Agency's Mars Express spacecraft . Radio waves beamed down to the surface by Marsis penetrated through the ice and bounced back to the spacecraft. Although the team can not measure the thickness of the water layer, Orosei says it is much more than a thin film. Before joining the museum, Stofan was a member of the MARSIS science team. (more...)

- July 25, 2018

Also, Parker Solar Probe's instruments might reveal the mechanisms at work behind the acceleration of solar energetic particles, which can reach speeds more than half as fast as the speed of light as they rocket away from the Sun. A robotic spacecraft which would be launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida . The Solar Probe team will maneuver the probe into the corona, which is the sun's outermost atmosphere, at 430,000 miles per hour. (more...)

- July 24, 2018

The stunning Mars glow up (I'm calling it a glow up, it looks incredible!) comes courtesy of the Mars Color Imager ( MARCI ), strapped to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter ( MRO ), which maps the entire planet each day. Scientists are using the rover's THEMIS instrument in order to follow the Red Planet's atmospheric and surface temperature, as well as the quantity of dust that can be found in the atmosphere. At the time, astronomers believed that the space between planets was a vacuum. The mission is using a United Launch Alliance Delta IV heavy rocket, one of the most powerful there is. These particles are a danger to astronauts and spacecraft. - July 24, 2018

Carmakers have said they do not support an emissions standards freeze and would prefer state and federal lawmakers work together, because they fear regulatory uncertainty as California and the feds duke it out in court. Fifteen states use this rule to implement California's standards within their own borders. Obama's plan would have required automakers to build cars that are increasingly more fuel efficient every few years until 2025. (more...)

This glorious sight occurs because of the way sunlight bends (refracts) through the Earth's atmosphere. Although the United Kingdom sits outside of the optimal zone, the moon will still rise eclipsed over the horizon. It is safe to look at a lunar eclipse without any protective eyewear. Although the moon is in Earth's shadow, some sunlight reaches the moon. Once the clock strikes midnight, the moon will be returning to normal and the penumbral eclipsing will end by around 12.30am BST. (more...)
