Amateur auroral photographers were the first ones to really bring attention to STEVE , specifically the members of a Facebook group called the Alberta Aurora Chasers . Bea Gallardo-Lacourt, a space physicist at the University of Calgary in Canada said that their chief interpretation is that STEVE is not an aurora. (more...)

Study co-author Charlie Rolsky said contact lenses are different than short-use plastics like straws, plastic bags or styrofoam because they are so important to people who wear them. Adding to the ever-growing problem of microplastic pollution , lenses may harm the environment more than we can ever imagine. Since it began in November 2016, the company says the program has collected 2.5 million used lenses, amounting to about 7 tons of waste. (more...)

And, in marked contrast to the Northern Lights, STEVE often extends for 600 miles in a vertical fashion, which is quite different from the more wavy Northern Lights. And that's the cool thing because this has been known by photographers for decades. However, the satellite detected no charged particles raining down to the ionosphere during the unusual phenomenon. While the centre of Lane is expected to bypass Hawaii, tropical-storm-force winds could stretch as far as 140 miles wide (220km). Forecasters warned of large swells that could produce risky surf and strong currents along some shorelines.
