Mother and Infant Among First Reported Fatalities as Hurricane Florence Makes Landfall

Florence is one of four named storms in the Atlantic. On the morning of September 14, the National Hurricane Centre warned that "catastrophic" flooding and "life-threatening" storm surges were expected to spread inland. "A wind gust to 105 mph (169 km/h) recently occurred at the Wilmington Airport, an Amateur Radio operator in Kirkland recently reported a wind gust to 98 mph (158 km/h), and a wind gust of 95 mph (153 km/h) was also recently reported by a Weatherflow private weather ... Some slight strengthening is possible during the next couple of days. Hurricane watches were in effect on those islands. The primary concern in the short term is Hurricane Florence . Tropical Storm Isaac made its closest approach to St. Croix Thursday night, passing nearly 200 miles to the south and having no apparent impact on the territory as it made its leisurely way across the Caribbean. And cameras aboard the International Space Station managed to catch incredible footage just a few minutes after the storm's landfall. Florence had been a Category-3 hurricane on Thursday but dropped to Category-1 before coming ashore. Corps staff worked with Army officials to review dams at Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Jackson in SC to "ensure any effects of Florence on those dams are mitigated", said Ray Alexander, the Corps' inter-agency services chief. Updated NHC forecasts showed the storm lingering near the coast, bringing days of heavy rains that could bring intense inland flooding from SC, where some areas could see as much as one metre of rain, to Virginia. The U.S. Coast Guard closed ports in Wilmington and Morehead City in North Carolina and Hampton Roads, Virginia, to inbound vessels greater than 500 tons and was requiring vessels of that size to leave if they did not have permission to be in the ports. The News & Observer reports that the storm's path shifted early Wednesday and it is now bearing down on southern North Carolina and northern SC, where it could dump up to 40 inches of rain in places. NOAA's latest report on Hurricane Florence places the centre of the weather system about 20 miles southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina and 55 miles east of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina . It has also moved most ships, submarines, and planes from their base at Hampton Roads, Virginia to safety far at sea or in distant airbases. Another photo (embedded below) was snapped on September 10 by astronaut Ricky Arnold while aboard the International Space Station.
