The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned that Florence, which has been downgraded to a tropical depression, continues to dump heavy rain on parts of North Carolina and northeastern SC. The centre of the storm was about 45 miles (70 km) north-northeast of Greenville and moving north at 10 mph (17 kph), the hurricane centre said. The US space agency NASA has launched what it describes as its most advanced space laser into orbit, in a bid to find out just how much of the Earth's ice is melting as the planet warms. We don't open up the [telescope] door for about another week. The satellite will be starting to collect the data which will be using a specially designed laser device which will give the scientists more data that is exactly about the ice that is melting very fast. Today SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell was quoted as saying that the company had its "eyes on the prize" for an initial BFR flight to Mars in 2024, although she acknowledged that SpaceX's timelines often slip to the right. The weather service has issued flash flood warnings and watches for more than a dozen counties. The destruction wreaked by Florence keeps growing as floodwaters keep rising. Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Keeli Hill says first responders found the man's pickup truck upside down and submerged in water that had flooded Route 607 in Louisa early Tuesday morning. In all, the storm led to the loss of life of 11 in the Tar Heel State and three in the Palmetto State. With tropical storm-force winds swirling 350 miles wide, Florence took down trees, power lines and damaged buildings. Governors have declared states of emergency in both Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia and Maryland. Two men were also killed in Lenoir County, North Carolina. (more...)
