This 2016 photo provided by NASA shows the Getz Ice Shelf. Data was derived from fairly high-resolution aerial photographs taken from a distance of about 350 meters via NASA's Operation IceBridge; satellite radar interferometry from multiple space agencies; and the ongoing Landsat satellite imagery series, begun in the early 1970s. - January 14, 2019

In 2007 Watson told the Sunday Times that he was "gloomy about the prospect of Africa" because " all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours, whereas all the testing says not really ". In the documentary he admitted that his views on race and intelligence had not changed - "not at all". In February 1953, a jubilant Dr Crick walked into The Eagle pub in Cambridge, the local for scientists at the University's Cavendish Laboratory, and ... (more...)

Birth of A Black Hole Seen for First Time Ever? Birth of A Black Hole Seen for First Time Ever?
- January 13, 2019

After comparing data from different sources, scientists are now confident that what they saw was the exact moment that a star collapsed into a compact object, forming a black hole or a neutron star. "We knew right away that this source went from inactive to peak luminosity within just a few days", Margutti said. When Margutti and her team examined The Cow's chemical composition, they found clear evidence of hydrogen and helium, which excluded models of compact objects merging-like those that ... (more...)
World oceans warming up more rapidly, caution US and Chinese scientists World oceans warming up more rapidly, caution US and Chinese scientists
- January 13, 2019

There is no doubt, none! The world's oceans are rising in temperature faster than previously believed as they absorb most of the world's growing climate-changing emissions, scientists said Thursday. The thermal expansion - water swelling as it warms - would raise sea level 12 inches (30 centimeters), above any sea level rise from melting glaciers and ice sheets . (more...)
TESS Discovers New Planet Three Times as Big as Earth
- January 12, 2019

Dubbed K2-288Bb, the alien world could be rocky or could be a gaseous planet similar to Neptune. Dips in the light are likely to mean a planet is passing in front of that star. These early observations hold the key to understanding a class of supernovae that serve as an important yardstick for cosmological studies. Unlike the Pi Mensae, this star is only one-fifth the size of our Sun. (more...)

According to the CHIME team, the phenomenon suggests that the source of origin of the bursts might be powerful astrophysical objects. And when there are increased sources and more repeaters for the goal of conducting a study, the cosmic puzzles would become easier for them to have better understanding and it would then be clear that what the actual source of those blasts was. - January 12, 2019

More than four years ago, a supermassive black hole at a center of a galaxy 300 million light-years away from Earth devoured a passing star, releasing a burst of X-ray activity. Experts estimate that some black holes spin at up to 99 percent the speed of light, but this latest study offers a way of being able to know for sure. (more...)

Aliens could be behind mysterious radio waves from deep space Aliens could be behind mysterious radio waves from deep space
- January 11, 2019

Now, a new FRB is getting some serious attention for a very specific reason. What corner of the universe these powerful waves come from and the forces that produced them remain unknown. "[We now know] the sources can produce low-frequency radio waves and those low-frequency waves can escape their environment, and are not too scattered to be detected by the time they reach the earth", The Independent quoted researcher Tom Landecker as saying. Radio Signals From A Galaxy Light Years Away Have Been Reported Radio Signals From A Galaxy Light Years Away Have Been Reported
- January 10, 2019

A fast radio burst lasts only a few milliseconds; due to both the very brief appearance and the inability to predict where they will happen, it has proven very hard for astronomers to study the FRBs. The low frequency of this new detection could mean that the source of the bursts differ. Tom Landecker, a CHIME team member from the National Research Council, said the findings provide rich information about the sources and environments that generate fast radio bursts. (more...)

HD 21749b orbits a star, about the size of the sun, 53 light years away. Indeed, HD 21749b is very far-flung for TESS; two other smallish worlds found by the mission have orbital periods of 11 hours and 6.3 days, respectively. So she consulted a second dataset, collected by the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher , or HARPS, a high-precision spectrograph installed on a large ground-based telescope in Chile, which identifies exoplanets by their gravitational tug on their host stars.
