South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the country had detected a 5.7 magnitude artificial quake close to the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in the north of the country, where Pyongyang has conducted nuclear tests in the past. South Korea will now discuss ways to possibly deploy the "most powerful" strategic assets the US military has, National Security Council head Chung Eui-yong said in a briefing, without elaborating. South Korea's weather agency said the artificial quake caused by the explosion was five times to six times stronger than tremors generated by the North's previous five tests. The blast first measured in at 5.6 on the Richter scale but has since been revised up to a much stronger 6.3.
