The Manatee County Sheriff's Office wrote on Twitter that deputies helped rescue the sea cows, but did not provide further details. Law enforcement joined the rescue effort, then directed everyone inside for their safety. "So we went for a ride and ended up saving two manatees", he wrote. And another citizen hero, Marcelo Clavijo was part of the crew who hoisted a manatee to safe waters. (more...)

Nathan Deal declared the state of emergency in 159 counties after Irma's forecasted path threatened to unleash deadly wind gusts, heavy rain and possible flooding as early as Sunday night, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. Any residents who remain, are encouraged to stay in shelters. The NHC reported Irma will bring an average of 2 to 6 inches of rain to much of the Southeast, including some mountainous areas that are prone to flooding. (more...)

Georgia is bracing for potentially far-flung impacts from Hurricane Irma, which forecasters say could swamp the coast with storm surge near Savannah and topple trees and power lines in Atlanta. Georgetown County should see strong wind and rain from Irma beginning early Monday as the major hurricane moves up the western coast of Florida.
