The surgeon, Simon Bramhall , 53, pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of assault in Birmingham Crown Court, central England, after he left "SB" etched on the internal organs of a man and a woman during procedures in 2013. Republicans are advancing a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, supplying all the votes to move it out of committee. The legislation would likely need 60 votes to clear a filibuster from Senate Democrats. Backers of the bill cited progress in medicine that allows premature babies to survive earlier in pregnancy than before. It would not allow exemptions for rape, incest, or fetal abnormalities. In its annual survey of journalists in jail published on December 13, the New York-based media watchdog found 262 journalists behind bars around the world in relation to their work, a new record after a historical high of 259 past year. The CPJ census shows that Ukraine, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan each imprisoned one journalist. Not surprisingly, since most of the "crimes" were against the state, politics was the most risky beat, representing 87% of those jailed. (more...)
