North Korea denounced on Monday joint military drills between South Korea and the United States amid heightened tension over the North's nuclear and missiles programmes which it said was aimed at a preemptive attack. Seoul and Washington claimed their joint war games, including the "Key Resolve" and "Foal Eagle" springtime joint military exercises, to be defensive in nature. (more...)

The North's military says it will launch an unspecified "merciless retaliation and unsparing punishment" on the United States over the Ulchi Freedom Guardian drills that began yesterday. Seoul and Washington have said the largely computer-simulated UFG exercise, which dates back to 1976, will go ahead as planned, but did not comment on whether the drills would be scaled back in an effort to ease tensions. "The re-entry vehicle has to survive and the warhead work", he said. China could also play a role in making sure the North sticks to any agreement in much the same way as the West negotiated with Iran, allowing Iran to trade and sell to the world while scaling back its nuclear programme. Turnbull, who called for " maximum economic pressure " to deal with North Korea, warned a war could have "catastrophic consequences".
